Microsoft Releases XP SP3 Via Automatic Update
Microsoft is releasing Windows XP Service Pack 3 through its Automatic Update service. Expect reports of users having problems with this update just like earlier complaints from users who downloaded the release candidate of SP3.
Computers that have the automatic update service enabled will download and install service pack 3 automatically. Users who don’t want to install the latest service pack can either disable the automatic update service, or download Microsoft’s Service Pack Blocker which will delay the update up to 2009.
If you do decide to get the latest update, all I can say is, good luck heh.

Hi Brown Baron how are doing?
We have had many problems at work with this service pack, anything from computers not being able to connect to the network to computers crashing.
I would advise anyone to back up their pc before even attempting to install this.
I think the best option with windows updates, is to have your settings on ‘Notify me but don’t automatically download or install them’ as this gives you full control over your downloads.
Regards
Jeff

Ahhhh, now that will be what’s throttling my laptop’s internet connection then!
I’m hoping it goes smoothly, nothing really in it to shout about so I can see why it’s just being rolled out through Windows Update without any great publicity.

Hmm, I will probably be skipping this update seeing the problems that are always caused by new service packs……

I think this is just another display of the wanton arrogance that has gained Microsoft universal disaproval over the years. The majority of XP users out there will have their updates set to ‘automatically download and install’ because this is what Microsoft suggest in set-up. To then force an update upon them that has previously been withdrawn due to serious perfomance issues is as single-mindedly pig-headed as the recent attempt at trying to force everybody into upgrading to Vista by threatening to withdraw XP support.
On a street-level this would be called extortion tactics.

OH so thats why both of my PC’s restarted in the middle of the night… Well since then I’ve also had the internet cut out a few times, but I don’t think that was from SP3.

Dang it.
I already disabled auto updating, but now I’ll actually have to watch what updates I’m installing.
XP SP3 doesn’t play well with my current recording rig, and getting new drivers out of my sound card manufacturer is painfully slow.

So far no problems with my HP P4 desktop running with disabled XP updater. That machine’s strictly for pre-Vista software and the kids internet activity which is mostly browser based.
Is there anything in the mix of Java or other browser ‘helpers’ requiring this in the future, Brown Baron?
