Patch For Firefox 3 Coming Soon?
Coming on the heels of Firefox 3’s record-setting download day, is an alert from Zero Day Initiative (ZDI), which states that the newest version of the popular open source browser contains a critical vulnerability that affects Firefox 3 and Firefox 2.
Here’s a section of the ZDI report:
We verified the vulnerability in our lab, acquired it from the researcher, then promptly reported the vulnerability to the Mozilla security team shortly after. Successful exploitation of the vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code. Not unlike most browser based vulnerabilities that we see these days, user interaction is required such as clicking on a link in email or visiting a malicious web page.
Understandably, no specifics are mentioned by ZDI while Mozilla works on a patch. Just practice safe surfing and you’ll be fine heh.
On a lighter note, have you grabbed a certificate of the Firefox 3 download day yet? Here’s mine:

You can get your certificate here.

Dang, this is really bad considering the amount of effort it must have taken to optimize Gecko to the level of performance it gives right now. The fact that it has such a major security flaw means that we may see more security flaws in the future. Hopefully the Mozilla guys remain astute and fix everything before it gets out of hand. The last thing we need is Firefox’s security to be comprimised. Still, it is a lot better than the slew of potential disasters waiting to happen when a large percentage of the internet is viewed (still) on Internet Explorer 6.

I downloaded FF3 on the big day. Used it for about 2 hours and uninstalled it. To many of the Add-ons didn’t work and I can’t work without my add-ons. I’ll give it a try next month and hopefully the patch will be done and the add-ons will work. Of course I’m still in limbo since the vulnerability effects FF2 also.
June 28th, 2008 15:25
I thought it was only Microsoft that had vulnerabilites
I have played it safe and installed FF3 but also kept FF2 installed.
That way I can play and still have FF2 as my main browser.
Regards.

I am not loving Firefox 3 the way I did 2. I could be that most of extensions still don’t work. When I saw the security updated covered 2 I finally un-installed 3 from all my computers and went back to my happy surfing and blogging from 2.
BTW what plugin are you using for the preview? That is slick!

I use FF and thank you guys for finally releasing this 3.0 security patch. I think security is a growing concern for FF community as it becomes more and more popular. Anyways, keep on good work.
