Adobe has just announced that Adobe Integrated Runtime, more commonly known as AIR, is now available for download.

Having been available as a beta since last year, AIR has been used to create a wide variety of rich Internet applications for the desktop. For those wanting to see what’s possible with AIR, there are over 200 AIR applications available for download at Adobe Exchange.

Adobe has also released the open-source development tool set, Flex 3, for building rich Internet applications.

General manager and vice president of Adobe’s platform business unit, David Wadhwani, stated:

“AIR takes the capabilities of Flex and Flash and extends that to the desktop. With the release of AIR, we’ve expanded our developer base to the millions of AJAX and HTML developers of the world.”

AIR apps can run on Windows and Mac systems. A Linux version might be released later this year.
