Mozilla Celebrates 500 Million Firefox Downloads

Mozilla is currently celebrating reaching the 500 million download mark for its increasingly popular open-source browser, Firefox. As part of the celebration, the Spread Firefox site has announced that Mozilla is trying to earn 500 million grains of donated rice from FreeRice which would be enough to feed 25,000 people.
Good news indeed. With the extensive amount of great add-ons available for the browser originally named Phoenix, it’s no surprise that Firefox is gaining ground.
Now all Mozilla needs is to plug all the memory leaks and finish Firefox 3.

Mozilla Firefox is great. I use it probably 90% of the time, and Opera, Safari and IE the other 10% (which is mainly just to goof around).
Also, once I get my dual boot set-up (Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux) I will be able to run Firefox on Ubuntu.
Open Source- Gotta love it!

That’s what I use the other browsers for too, just to mess around hehe

Agreed they deserve it for creating a great browser. I still can’t get my partner to stop using bloody explorer though!

I really like using Firefox as well, although I frequently have problems with it sucking up memory. I can bring up the task manager and see the memory usage go up and up and up until my computer is just crawling along.

That’s true. With all the tabs I have open, it doesn’t take long for it to use 400 megs upwards

I don’t seem to have the same problem with IE7, even with a similar number of tabs open. I don’t even have to have a lot of tabs open with Firefox and without opening any more tabs, see the memory usage creep up and up until I have to kill Firefox and start again. At least on my computer, IE7 seems much better behaved in that manner.

That’s similar to what my relatives have been saying about IE7 - they mention IE7’s lack of memory leaks whenever we talk about Firefox.
It really is Firefox’s biggest hurdle. If they want to be able to take a big bite out of IE’s market, they need to plug the leaks.
