R.I.P. - Netscape
If you’re a regular Netscape user, I have bad news. Starting February 2008, product support for all versions of Netscape Navigator will cease. This may not be surprising to those who’ve switched to Firefox as it’s perceived to be the next incarnation of Navigator.
Netscape Navigator can be traced back to 1994 as the creation of Marc Andreessen. It took Microsoft until 1998 to overtake Netscape as the browser of choice.
In the official announcement, Tom Drapeau had this to say about the end of Navigator’s development:
AOL’s focus on transitioning to an ad-supported web business leaves little room for the size of investment needed to get the Netscape browser to a point many of its fans expect it to be. Given AOL’s current business focus and the success the Mozilla Foundation has had in developing critically-acclaimed products, we feel it’s the right time to end development of Netscape branded browsers, hand the reins fully to Mozilla and encourage Netscape users to adopt Firefox.
The Netscape site will still function as a news site, but the story of Netscape Navigator ends on February. My tip for those hardcore Navigator users? Get Firefox
.

I really not surprised and if I’m honest I have to say that I thought that Netscape was dead already.

It is kinda surreal for me to see Netscape go bye bye… Netscape Navigator version 4.0 was very memorable for me. It is so strange how the Internet has an accelerated life just like a dog. You know the saying 1 year for a human is 7 for a dog. It’s almost like the Internet is the same way. Granted, the Internet isn’t dying by any means, but it just grows and evolves as such a rapid pace.
It is truly surreal to see Netscape come to an end. It surly has been a very long and slow death for the browser.

@Garry:
I remember the good old days for Netscape. It’s incredible when you stop and think on all that has happened since the time before the < blink > tag and the introduction of the animated gif.
