The Easy Way To Run Your Own File Server

We’ve all thought about running our own file sharing server for our own network of friends. We don’t actually go through with it since running a file server is not for the average computer user. For those of you looking for an easy way to run your own file sharing server, this should help you out.

HFS (HTTP File Server) is a free application that lets you run a file server without having to install anything. The program is just one executable file. No need to install anything, just run it.

Just drag and drop any file you wish to share into HFS and you’re good to go. You can monitor all connections from the tray icon, specify the IP address, and define which port you want the server to run on.

HFS runs on all Windows versions and can run with Wine under Linux. Shared files are presented in a simple HTML page for your friends, although you can customize the page template if you want it to look differently. HFS is also capable of integrating with Windows Explorer so you can share any file with just a right click.

For those who are interested, here’s the HFS FAQ and the HFS Guide.
