Wikipedia Founder To Launch Search Engine On Jan. 7
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales will be launching an open source search engine on January 7, 2008. The search engine will differ from Google and Yahoo in that users will be able to see how search results are arrived at.
So far, the Wikia Search Project has a working search application, a web crawler, and a search algorithm. Closed beta testing is currently going on before the scheduled public launch.
Obviously, the search engine won’t have as many available results at the start. It will take some time for its crawler to build a sizable list comparable to the big boys. It will be interesting to see how many people use it regularly.
