Visionary: Free Magazine Style WordPress Theme
Still haven’t found the perfect theme for your blog? How about this one? Visionary by Justin Tadlock is a free magazine style WordPress theme that is designed for sites that are looking to adapt a newspaper or magazine style look.
Compatible with WordPress 2.1 and above, Visionary is also 2.3 tag-ready. One feature that is popular with news-themed sites, is the video feature that displays a video in a small window on the sidebar. The theme is still in beta as there seems to be a problem with how IE6 displays flash videos on this theme.
Visionary has built-in support for the Flickr RSS and Related Posts plugins. The sidebar tabbed navigation uses a custom jQuery script. jQuery is packaged with the theme.
Aside from the problem with IE6, Visionary is another great theme to consider if you’re thinking of doing a redesign for your site.

I’ve got a project I’m slowly working on that might work well in a magazine style format. The more of these great looking magazine themes you and Mark find, the merrier ;P

OOOOOOOO, that is coooool. I could do so much with that theme, but where in blue blazes would I put it?
Dang it, now I have to think and it kind of hurts. LOL

I think this would be perfect for my ferrets website. I’ve added video so I can easily sink it in there. I’m using Mimbo on my cooking & weight loss website.

I think this theme has a lot of potential, but I tired it out and something about feels empty. I don’t want to be negative, because it has a ton of power, but in the next release I would like to see it polished up a bit. As far as free magazine themes go, The Morning After has to be number one. It’s so flexible once you get in there. This one definately is more powerful and has more features, but if you don’t want to use FlickR or the video, then what? If you are really running a magazine you aren’t going use FlickR. that’s the problem with these magazine themes, they are thinking stylish blog, when they should be thinking professional magazine with flexibiltiy for the person who wants to use it as a blog theme. The other thing I hate in these themes in the Tag Cloud, could you imagine seeing that on CNN.com? Or the New York Times site? That should always be the measuring sitck when designing these themes.

Yeah, personally I wouldn’t use the Flickr section so I’d have to look for something good to replace it. Tag clouds .. I’d probably just have them in their own separate page
The Morning After Theme is another great one. I agree about a professional magazine/newspaper theme that can still be a blog.

Echoing your support of Visionary. I have a couple of different news type blogs that I’ve been using it on for the last six months and I love it. It’s very easy to use, once you figure out the Feature story part. Very clean look and having the video and flickr in the sidebar is very popular with my readers.
