Active Pixels: Free Image Editor
There are a lot of free graphic editors available but not all have great features. Popular editors usually have better features but they’re not free. Idea Systems’ Active Pixels is a free image editor for Win XP/NT/Vista that offers numerous features usually found in commercial image editors.
The main menu looks just like most commercial image editors and you can see tools that you would normally see in Photoshop present in Active Pixels’ interface. The first feature anyone should look for in a free image editor is the layer option.

Aside from layer support with 33 render modes, Active Pixels’ features include support for 100+ graphics formats, import/export PSD formats, animated gifs, an icon editor, support for 160 RAW camera models, over 80 filters, etc. We’re talking a lot of features here.
Here are the rest of the features:
- Alpha-channel full support (transparency) for all formats.
- More than 10 picture resize algorithms.
- Selection by magicwand, lasso with powerful selection modifying function.
- Different color correction functions.
- High quality auto color correction functions.
- Canvas rotate and transform.
- Powerfull optimization for web with live preview and large number of options.
- Brush, pencil, gradient, text and another instruments.
- Different additional functions - tile, crop.
- Very comfortable canvas size changing (you can set canvas position manually).
- Color selector is more comfortable (HSB).
- Undo/redo with action captions and without any limitations.
- Color calculation instruments.
The download size is 7 MB.

I’m a sucker for a free image editor. Guess I’ll have to give this one a try. Wouldn’t want it to feel lonely and rejected, now would I?
I will say that I have been pleased with The Gimp and Paint.Net. I’ve been going back and forth and learning more about them as I go. I also like Inkscape, which is an image editor of course, but one of the things I like about it is that I can do my work in it and export it to an image. Saves me time.

I was surprised at the file size too. I guess it’s because it contains none of the regular bloatware that commercial apps have

I love image editors, so I’ll have to try it. After all, it’s free so no harm, no foul.
From what you’ve written, it does sound pretty neat though.
