Google Sponsors $30 Million Race To The Moon

Google and X Prize Foundation has just announced the launching of the $30 Million Google Lunar X Prize. Private companies from all over the world will competing to be the first to land a privately funded robotic rover on the Moon that will complete several mission objectives, including roaming the lunar surface for at least 500 meters and sending video, images and data back to the Earth.
The prize purse will be $20M for the grand prize, $5M for the second prize, and another $5M in bonus prizes. The official contest site states:
The Grand Prize is $20 million until December 31st 2012; thereafter it will drop to $15 million until December 31st 2014 at which point the competition will be terminated unless extended by Google and the X PRIZE Foundation.
Whoever said that Google was “everywhere” hit the bullseye.
