Black Screen Of Death For Pirated Vista
New operating system, new bsod color. Anyone who hears the phrase “blue screen of death” knows it’s Microsoft’s gift to the world. With the new Windows Vista, blue has been replaced with black.
An email from Microsoft to a large Windows Vista distributor entitled “Pirated Vista — A darkness descends!”, describes what pirated users of Vista will experience.
An article by Rodney Gedda provides a peek into the email. Part of the email said:
“Good afternoon, as of this week, Microsoft has activated a function in Vista called ‘Reduced Functionality.’ This is a specific function in Vista that effectively disables non-genuine copies of Windows. Therefore anyone who has a pirated copy of Vista will experience:
A black screen after one hour of browsing
No start menu or task bar
No desktopPlease communicate this antipiracy initiative from Microsoft to your resellers — note this function has only just been activated in Vista worldwide and therefore any issues with non-genuine versions will start to arise from now onward.”
Will this be effective? What do you guys think?

Somebody might already have started to work on getting around it.

1. Use an alternitive shell such as bblean or litestep, so no need for desktop or start menu.
2. Set up an SSH tunnel to another non-Vista machine. Set this as a SOCKS5 proxy in Firefox, or whatever browser you use. Microsoft can’t see that you are browsing and not doing something else.
I’ve never used Vista, but I’m pretty sure this would work.

@Madhur:
You’re right buddy. I think if it does work, it won’t last long as people always seem to find ways around it.
