Hewlett Packard Launches Linux Desktops

It seems that big pc manufacturers are taking a liking to penguins as Hewlett Packard has just announced that it will be selling Linux-based PCs . Coming after Dell’s jump to penguin land, Hewlett Packard will start selling its DX2250 preloaded with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Desktop in Australia for $AU600, which is a little under $500 US.
The PCs will be AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core, Athlon 64 and Sempron processors. All units will come with OpenOffice, Firefox and Evolution (e-mail) installed. Red Hat Australia General Manager, Max McLaren, told APCMAG:
“With the cost of proprietary systems continuing to rise, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Desktop minimises acquisition and ongoing deployment costs, leaving more money and resources for other high-value projects and tasks.”

I think lots of companies will jump on the Linux bandwagon. I wish Microsoft had based their operating system on Unix but they didn’t. The only fear I have is that Linux becomes a proprietary OS and Linux lovers like me will be left having to pay for it.

@Bobby:
That’s a legitimate concern. I’ve actually heard a lot of people talking about that.

Just last night I was saying that I am finished with Windows operating systems. After this PC retires, I’ll be using something else for a change. I used Linux some time back, although I may go Mac… we’ll see.

I think the last time I used a Mac was in the 80’s heh. It sure looks good now.

Linux will never become a proprietary OS. There is to big an open source community out there who are working full time to improve and keep Linux free.
