I love how stuff works, I use that a lot these days. I like how I can read up on one topic then their related links will keep me reading and reading because there is so much useful information on that site. I think I use wikipidea more than how stuff works though I just find wikipedia more informative than how stuff works.

I've been a big fan of How Stuff Works for years! Great stuff!

Another great reference is Cecil Adams' The Straight Dope site that's based on his weekly question and answer column.

How stuff works is one of my favorite sites for answering my kids questions, because they are ALWAYS asking how stuff works.

My favorite ones so far "How Teleportation Will Work" and "How Space Elevators Will Work".

That site is a wonderful tool. I have yet to really allow my kids to use the net for school essays, papers as of yet as I feel the need to know how to use references the old-fashioned way is a valuable skill set.

Yet, that's going to have to fall by the wayside here soon, I think. And it's sites like this that are the reason why.

Great stuff.

Seiche,

We let our kids use the Internet, but we are very careful about the way they use it.

1. They have to use bookmarks to get to sites (not the Search Engines)
2. They can only use kid friendly search engines, like Ask Jeeves for kids. And only when they ask us first.
3. If they want to visit a new site, we have to check it out first.
etc.

Also, our PC with Internet access is in a very public and well trafficed are of our house, which encourages proper use of the computer.

It has worked well for us so far, but even so we try to be very careful about what they do on the Internet. Howstuffworks is one of the sites our oldest child (13 yr old) is allowed to visit for looking up information.

We have never used Netnanny or any of those products, but we have certainly thought about it.

All the best,
George

@Christy:
Thanks! What's funny is, next time my kids ask me something, I'll just give them a piece of paper with the url of howstuffworks hehehe :grin:
@Shankar:
Glad you liked it buddy
@Seiche:
That was my policy before too. That was until my oldest once said to me, "Dad, this encyclopedia is behind the times. I'll just look at the Wiki." Haha this was how I looked :shock: .
I understand what you mean though. :grin:
@George:
My oldest is 13 too. When he asked me if he could join MySpace I said, "Sure, in 30 years." :mrgreen:
