Malware That Deletes All Your MP3s
A new type of malware was announced by Symantec a few days ago. Classified as having a very low risk level, W32.Deletemusic can be extremely annoying to unlucky victims since its main purpose is to track down and delete all mp3 files on a user’s computer.
The worm supposedly spreads via removable flash drives. Once a computer is infected, the worm copies itself to all drives on the victim’s computer. It will then create an autorun file to start itself whenever a user accesses a drive.
If you somehow get infected with this, take a look at Symantec’s removal page.
Just be careful. You wouldn’t want your entire music collection to go up in smoke

That scares me, because it takes so long to compile a really good mp3 collection. It really makes me wonder why people put so much effort into being destructive. Why don’t they just delete their own mp3s if deleting mp3s seems so important!

@Danelle:
Haha I agree! Yeah, it takes forever to build a great collection. I think I need to do some backup hehe

Fortunately most of my mp3s are burned to dvds. A lot of dvds
August 3rd, 2007 03:15
That scares me too!Looks like I’ll have to get backup for my music files!

Why the hell MP3s? hehe
Still it looks cool more than it looks scary lol
For all those jealous people out there
its time to kill your friend’s music collection

August 3rd, 2007 03:56

@DJ:

Yeah targeting mp3s is a bit strange. This could be used as a really nasty prank
@Haris:
That’s a big collection buddy
@Shaun:
Next they’ll make one that deletes movies hehehehe
August 3rd, 2007 09:14
i suspect that a couple large music and media corporations are being this
August 3rd, 2007 11:08
That’s why it’s always good to have backups. It is strange that it targets mp3’s instead of other documents or file types. I’m wondering, maybe this virus was created by the RIAA or Recording companies? Conspiracy Theory! Hehe
Good read. Thanks for sharing Brown Baron! Btw, I’ve added you to my blogroll.

@Jamaipanese:

Funny you should say that. That’s the first thing my wife said when I told her about it haha
@Jaypee:

I guess people who use ogg aren’t afffected.
August 3rd, 2007 13:15
You’re right!
August 4th, 2007 07:28
@ Jamaipanese: I fully agree! I guess they said if you can’t beat em, destroy their collection!
Back up to an external drive and you’ll be fine. Also get AVG from Grisoft for free antivirus.
August 4th, 2007 07:33
lol, yup your right guys
August 4th, 2007 07:40
Hands up RIAA and MPAA, we know you’re behind this!
Good job all my music has been converted to m4a, AAC+ FTW!
@Brown Baron
That would be one nasty prank, you’re not having my email address
August 4th, 2007 12:37
I use AVG too

@tech-rant:
Haha
August 4th, 2007 13:46
There would be no need for the worm on my system cause I wiped out all the mp3s I had some time ago by accidentally formatting the drive. I am a genius!
August 4th, 2007 14:18
LOL Vijay

I firmly believe in backups like Mike mentioned above. I have it all on discs. I also have my hard drives partitioned and keep my music both on my NTFS and an extra good ol’ fat 32! Man cannot live by bread alone, my music is just as important

@Bobby:
It’s funny but, my music collection is the one that I backup the most
