Search Crystal: New Search Engine

Search Crystal LogoSearch Crystal is a new search engine that combines search results from mulitiple search engines and displays them in a visual format. The interface is flash-based so it’s slower than your typical search engines. Since it’s still in beta, it looks like they’re still refining the interface.

Results are color coded depending on which search engine it came from. Navigating through the results is not intuitive. You’re going to have to experiment a little to get the hang of it.

The biggest downside is the speed. Most people searching for something won’t appreciate the time it takes to load the results. The interface might be confusing to some.

I like the idea, but I think I’ll stay with Google  .

High five to Josh Lowensohn.

If they improve on the interface and loading speed, it would probably be more popular

Looks cool, Brown. But, a very interesting way to search. I’m sure the performance will be addressed as time goes.

Thank you for mentioning searchCrystal. I am one of its developers :)
Yes, the flash load takes a few seconds … wish it was shorter, working on improving it … in terms of results display, depending of the search engines compared, the results may take a few seconds to show up: web engines are the fastest to return results, whereas blog and tagging engines are the slowest to return results. The “slowest” engine determines how quickly searchCrystal can analyze and visualize the results.
searchCrystal does not aim to replace Google etc … for us is not “either or”, but “as well as” … searchCrystal lets you see the big picture, lets you find highly relevant results (the more engines that find a result and the more highly they rank it, the better the result), see the quality of the results provided (the more agreement between the engines, the higher the quality) and can be used for SEO (where do search engines place my site for a specific query) …
In terms of the result display, you also see them in a familiar list display (click icons in the top right corner of widget).
The widget showcases some the functionality of the free full version, which lets you compare up to 500 results, add comments and share and compare saved crystals with your friends. It offers you a powerful research and competitive intelligence tool.
… This is turning into a “novel” … in short, there is “a lot under the hood” in searchCrystal, which is a new service and your feedback and suggestions on how to improve and enhance it would be greatly appreciated at feedback@searchcrystal.com. Thanks :)

Thanks for taking the time to clarify a few things. I actually like the implementation of Search Crystal. For me, it makes searching fun.

I understand that since it’s flash-based, pulling data from various search engines and organizing the results inevitably lead to a little delay. I’ll be checking it out every few days to see what’s new.

Thanks for dropping by and taking the time comment! I’ll definitely be using the feedback link if I come up with useful suggestions
