i-LIMB: World’s First Comercially Available Bionic Hand

i-Limb Demo 1 i-Limb Demo 2 i-Limb Demo 3

Touch Bionics has designed the first comercially available bionic hand. The i-LIMB is a fully articulating prosthetic device with five individually powered digits. Amputees will appreciate the various grip patterns that the i-LIMB is capable of. The key grip for holding business card or keys, the power grip for holding large objects, the precision grip for picking up small objects, and the index point for using computer keyboards or ATM machines.

Patients won’t have to wear gloves to cover the hand. The i-LIMB comes with a flexible skin covering that blends anatomically with the rest of their body.

    I love the power of science. Hey, I didn’t see in your post - Do they have a “beat down” position for the bionic hand? You don’t mention it, but the last pic looks like it’s available.

    Hard to sing in type format, but I’ll give it a shot:

    “Dah dah dah dahhhhh, dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dahhhhh…we can rebuild him, better than he was before…”

    Close? Okay, it was the theme to the Six Million Dollar Man. Loved that show as a kid. This post just reminded me of it. :)

    That was the first thing that came to my mind. The Six Million Dollar Man. I wonder how many people remember that show?

    Well, it’s clear to me that Netflix doesn’t remember it, otherwise, I’d be renting them all the time. Guess we’ll have to wait to see how the new Bionic Woman this Fall pans out.

    Hehe…never was one that took to that show, but as long as you’re going down memory lane, you might be interested in Nostalgia Central and TVparty.

    Sorry, I probably just blew the whole rest or your day with these. ;)

    This is simply amazing. I tried to find out some additional info, things like dexterity, movement speed, etc, but with no luck. Any word on any other applications?

    Yes, I love the wonder of Science (if it is only put in the right use, of course).
    I am a bionic woman because I have a pacemaker implant :):)-

    @Grace:
    Cyborg bloggers? That’s an interesting thought :mrgreen:

    @Seiche:
    I looked at their site again but didn’t see any specific info on the things you mentioned. Even their FAQ didn’t mention anything about dexterity and movement speed. Maybe their videos have some additional information :smile:

    @Shaun:
    I agree. Now all they need to do is develop a booster shot for the common cold :mrgreen:

    @Jamy:
    Really? You are my favorite bionic woman then :grin:

    U are so sweet, yes, I had my 1st pace maker implant 5 years ago :)-. It is the one of the best scientific invention. I am given a second chance :)-

    I have seen a few of bionic hand or rather Prosthetic arm in my work but this one looks far more sophisticated ! :smile:

    Yeah, I remember the Six Million Dollar Man! My favorite part was the electronic sound effects and the slow-motion. Brings back some wonderful childhood memories! :razz: I can remember lifting things up, pretending I was bionic. Good times.

    Kinda makes me think of Dean Kamen’s new robotic arm.

    It’s sad that it takes something so tragic as our military service men & women getting hurt to serve as a catalyst for such incredible innovation but at the same time, it’s incredibly encouraging to see the R&D leaps and bounds that’re being made as a result of the injuries that our troops are sustaining. I believe this has been the driving force behind some tremendous recent advances in prosthetic development and pain-management techniques.

    I noticed that too hehe.

    @Rob O.:
    Yeah. At least they finally did it. Now they need to take that technology and apply that to legs and feet.

    Even though I’m old enough to remember the 6 Million Dollar Man (2nd grade lunch box) my 1st thought was the Terminator. It’s funny how Hollywood and fiction keep sticking with the stainless steel metal look while the real world is all about plastics and compounds of plastics. Guess they just don’t look as cool…
