Windows Live Local: Virtual Earth Technology Preview
Have you ever wanted to drive through the streets of San Francisco or Seattle without having to worry about hitting other cars and pedestrians? The Windows Live Local: Virtual Earth Technology Preview lets you walk or drive around downtown San Francisco and Seattle without having to obey traffic rules. You can even drive over cars(yes I tried it heh). If you choose to drive, you’ll get a view of your front windshield and side windows. Choose from a sports car or race car to drive around.

Once they add more cities, this could be pretty useful if you want to memorize certain routes.

Freaking cool. Kinda concerns me about big-brother’esque problems though. This + Google Earth = a lot of possibilities. Some of those possibilities seem scary to me.
Thanks for this though!

@Clara:
I keep running over things for some reason

Sounds great! I read about it somewhere else before. And if you’re at the wrong place at the wrong time, you could end up being in one of the images.

I love Google’s mapping and street view service, but this is one area that Microsoft is giving them a run for their money.

I have been doing this for months now in Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas with the “Vehicle of Death” cheat - well except that the other cars blow up when I hit them. But my car is still okay!!!
This would actually be really useful - then you can get the feel for a place before going there, and in larger cities it can sometimes be intimidating if you have no clue where you are and what route you should take. I wonder if they are only going to feature US cities, or if they are also going to show some in other countries (ie. Canada?)

Man, that is really cool. Unfortunately, I think I ran over a bunch of people.
Shine on,
Aaron

@Grace:

Let me know if you get caught on camera
@listikal:
This should speed up the development for both
@Danielle:
Featuring other countries would be great. I’d probably end up touring all the places I could find
@Aaron:
I have a feeling those were the same people I ran over
July 18th, 2007 23:52

forcepersuade my kids to stop so I could use the computerJuly 19th, 2007 21:48
Like listikal said, this thing looks really good. Microsoft is definitely trying not to lose any more ground to Google on anything. Next thing they need to do is lower the price of Office!!

@Coolio:
Haha that would be a miracle
