Rome Rebuilt In Virtual 3D
Rome Reborn 1.0 is a real time 3D reconstruction of 320 A.D. Rome created by an academic team of architects, computer scientists and archaeologists from UCLA, the Milan Polytechnic and the University of Virginia’s Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities. Visitors can navigate through the virtual streets of Rome and even visit the Colosseum.
It seems that talks are underway with Linden Labs to have them host the entire simulation in ‘Second Life’.
Here are a few screenshots taken from the videos:

If you want to view videos of the simulation, check out Rome Reborn 1.0.

It’s been a while since I’ve been on Second Life, but do you think it’s powerful enough to handle something like this? …I guess it is depending on the detail huh?

It’s amazing to me to see how slowly virtual reality has progressed over the past 10 years. It seems to me that we should be far more advanced than where we are today. Oh well, judging from this video we will be able to take a virtual and interactive tour of Ancient Rome within the decade…

It’s true. Virtual reality has taken an incredibly long time to progress. I can’t understand why though.

I think it’s because VR is still an expensive endeavor on the consumer side. Until someone steps up (like M$) and makes the technology um…I guess accessible to developers on both a hardware and software level, I don’t know that it’s worth it for companies to really deal with it. I mean, game dev is expensive enough. This is imho of course.

Virtual 3D looks amazing, looks like we can have a virtual walk though of the ancient era.

@Bush:

I think you’re right. Too bad though. I’d like to have my own holodeck one of these days
@Nirmal:
I wonder if there will come a time when this is how we surf the web

Super cool man , wish we can have more of these things .

When they figure how to make it not so hardware intensive we probably will
