Social Search And Bookmarking With Sproose

SprooseI ran across an interesting post about a new search engine with different features compared to your normal search engines. Sproose is a new search engine that displays search results according to the amount of votes a site has received. Sites with a higher number of votes are displayed higher on the results page.

The only problem with this system is that you may get results that aren’t really what you’re looking for, but only show up because of the number of votes it has. The voting system sounds a little like Digg doesn’t it?

You can also search by using the tag cloud, though there doesn’t seem to be a clear way to add tags to your sites. Users can vote for any site they like but the votes won’t be permament unless you’re registered. You can see the sites that a registered user voted for by clicking on his name.

The only problem I can see is the potential for ‘gaming’ the system. Couple that with a search engine and you could get a lot of irrelevant search results.

I like how they are trying to do something original here, but this just isn’t going to fly long term. They really needed a database of searches already.

If I had more time, I’d have written a similar web application myself.

It’s the next logical step, so it’s got that it’s-about-damn-time thing about it.

When stuff is voted on, it inherits trust, and trust as a currency is incredibly difficult to beat…

The idea seems good but as you suggested , it can fail due to irrelevant results.

If they could make sure that the results would always be relevant, then the voting would be an interesting addition to the search concept.

I don’t know — another search engine? And one that you have to vote on to get somewhere? Too much potential to gaming the system just like digg. Interesting concept, though.

The way that I read it at first glance, was that Sproose aggregates search results from the likes of Digg, del.icio.us, Reddit, StumbleUpon et cetera.

That would be far more exciting, and much more meaningful than what they’re currently hoping to achieve.

And, it would be much more difficult to game if that was the case…

If the results were aggregated then it would be difficult to game. I hope they can pull it off .. the concept sounds real good on paper.

Speaking of Digg and searching…It sucks. Anybody disagree?

[…] I happened upon Sproose, the user-powered search engine while rummaging through Ariel’s ‘blog, who’s more commonly known as The Brown Baron. […]
