eBay Acquires StumbleUpon

StumbleUponIt seems that the acquisition season is far from over as eBay has just confirmed their purchase of StumbleUpon to the tune of $75 million. The final price is much higher than the $45 million that was mentioned when eBay was still in negotiation with StumbleUpon earlier this month. StumbleUpon’s members are estimated to be about 2.3 million.

eBay’s senior director, Michael Buhr, said:

“StumbleUpon is a great fit within our goal of pioneering new communities based on commerce and sustained by trust. StumbleUpon’s downloadable toolbar provides an engaging and unique experience to its users, but it is the similarities in our approaches to the concept of community that make it such a compelling addition to eBay.”

Do you guys get the feeling that everybody’s buying everyone else? :mrgreen:

    Well, it would have been nice if StumbleUpon would have told me personally that they rejected my bid. Glad to know I have an “in” to the grapevine to learn of this information. :P

    I can see it now: StumbleUpon Products, where you browse one product at a time according to your tastes.

    It does worry me though that we’re all headed toward a monopoly and losing out on competitive pricing and such.

    Does it all really matter? Google is going to get so big that they’ll be buying everyone else anyway.

    I guess that means customer service goes down the toilet then?

    eBay customer service is absolutely useless. You can’t talk to anyone on the phone, and the numpties that deal with your email seem to have the intelligence of demented slugs. I actually wonder if it’s a bot that reads and responds as the responses are so canned, and they never seem to read all your email.

    @Eyebee:
    I’ve had a few friends complain to me about that, especially email replies. I actually like StumbleUpon .. I hope it doesn’t go downhill from here.

    I wrote to StumbleUpon expressing my disappointment at their acquisition by eBay. I cited the reason for this as being the dire lack of professionalism I’ve experienced when dealing with customer service at eBay.

    I got a reply back from Barry at StumbleUpon, saying that he was sorry I was disappointed but they would be continuing to give support and service in house.

    I hope that’s true. StumbleUpon is one of the better social networks .. at least for me :grin:
