Microsoft Introduces ‘Microsoft Surface’
Microsoft has just introduced its ‘Microsoft Surface’ at the D: All Things Digital conference in Carlsbad, California. Code-named Milan, this new technology turns ordinary surfaces like walls and tabletops into computers. Users navigate the system’s interface by using the touch-sensitive display, which means no keyboard and mouse. The flat display measures 30 inches diagonally and images are projected onto the display by a custom DLP engine.
Since the system is able to detect multiple contact points, multiple users can access the system at the same time. This means that you can have different users moving files and navigating through the interface with their fingers all at the same time.
Microsoft has stated that Milan will be seen at some casinos and commercial properties by the end of the year. Mark Bolger, director of marketing for Microsoft’s consumer productivity experiences group, stated:
“I think our approach of starting first in commercial space will allow consumers to change how they shop and how they’re entertained. It will help them understand how surface will change their lives. Over time, we’ll go beyond the leisure and entertainment industries, and move into different environments, such as schools, businesses, homes.”
I can definitely see the possibilities with this technology. Although, it might be kind of hard to write a blog post using the tabletop
.

For once, this looks like a good idea, and I for one have been the principle recipient of the majority of the click traffic for the phrase: “Jeff Han Microsoft” today, so I’ve no complaints!
As the TechCrunch article put it, it’s very “left field” for Microsoft, but it looks like a good idea.
However, it’s iterative rather than innovative, as much of the technology is already out there.
That said, there’s some nice touches, though, like the wireless synching, which should really remove the pain .. or at least off-set some of the pain of using Microsoft products…

The wireless synching is one of the better features .. I wonder if this will give Vista sales a little boost. Probably not
