MOG: Music Social Networking

MOG

I’ve managed to find a social networking site that’s a little different from the standard networking sites that we see on the web. MOG is a social networking site that focuses on music discovery by putting well known bands and indie(independent) artists on the same field with their fans. Members have their own profile, or MOGs, and customize it with widgets, uploaded music, and videos. Users can listen to a 30 second clip of any song in the Gracenote Music Database. If you’re looking to make new music friends, the service automatically tracks the songs you’re listening to while logged in and puts a list of users with similar tastes on your profile page.

While the service may appeal to those who are into social networking sites like MySpace, I don’t see myself signing up. I’ll stick with the blogging communities  .

There’s so many different social networking sites popping up left and right now. I certainly can’t keep up with all of them and don’t intend to :P

I know of two other music based social networking sites: last.fm (http://www.last.fm) and RawRip (http://www.rawrip.com). I’ll check out MOG too. I’m trying to help publicize my friends’ band, so the more exposure they can get on all of these the better.

I think MOG is a little similar to Last.fm. Are indie bands getting good exposure from sites like these?

I think bands have gotten some good exposure from MySpace, but I don’t know if these other sites have really caught on yet. I don’t think they’ve reached a “tipping point” yet — a lot of people are still discovering them.
