Paint.NET: Free Image Editor

For those who don’t have Photoshop and don’t feel like spending money for a great image editor, here’s a free alternative that might suit your needs. Paint.NET is surprisingly full of features for a free image editor. The size of the installer is only 1.3 megs.
The interface is simple and has some similarity with MS Paint to make it easy for most people to learn a new application. Some of the features are layers, unlimited history, clone stamp, magic wand, gradient tool, text editor, and a recolor tool. Paint.NET also includes special effects like 3D rotate, emboss, blurring, sharpening, and more.
Here’s a screen of the app:

Photoshop is still the best image editor but if you don’t want to buy it, you can always try Paint.NET.

Hi. Thanks for the info. As soon as I get my internet working at home, I intend to download the program and try it out. It would be great if I could use the program to illustrate books, make prints of my art work and design the covers on my cds. Do you know if I would be able to upload photographs into it and work with them?

This looks like it could be a viable option for free image editing.
Have you tried GIMP? I did, it didn’t work very well on Windows, but it works great on my installation of PCLinuxOS.

@magsburg:

I’d guess that the program supports most major image formats. If you find one that it doesn’t, there’s a link on the product page to the available plugins. Lots of tutorials too.
@Matthew:
Haven’t tried using Gimp. I heard it was pretty good but a little unstable. Hmm kinda sounds like us buddy
May 25th, 2007 01:58
??who are you calling unstable??
May 25th, 2007 02:47
This program does look very promising, but does anyone know how it stands up to Gimpshop?

listikal…
Did you not read the other comments? This question was already addressed.

I have no idea buddy

I’ve been using Gimp for a while now. I wouldn’t call it unstable, but I’d be the first to admit it’s low on the user-friendly side. I used to use Photoshop back in the day, but my career path changed and it dropped on the side. I was pleased to find Gimp come along, but I have to say that judging from the screenshot alone, it looks like it may be a better alternative because one of my biggest gripes with Gimp is that the palettes are treated like windows that go behind the active window you’re in. Drives me crazy!
Hehe…it’s funny you post this one because I was going to write something about Gimp in the very near future.

This software looks cool. I’ll definitely use it, I was on the look out for such a free software. Thanks for sharing.

You’re welcome buddy

This thing looks good , only 1.3 MB . Gonna try it .

Mark…
That drove me crazy about Gimp too. That & all the errors I received when trying to use it on a Windows XP platform.
I use it infrequently on my PCLinuxOS installation, but have not had any problems there. Obviously though, it was made to run on Linux.

@Matthew: well I’m glad it wasn’t just me. I thought for sure I just couldn’t figure something out. I’m going to try out this Paint thing this weekend. Maybe it’ll be a more comfortable fit.

I’ve been using Photoshop for about ten years now, so chances are nothing is going to takes it place for me, but I can’t help but laugh when I see programs like these.
I remember back in the day when Photoshop could easily fit on a few floppy disks. Now it’s ballooned to well over a couple hundred megs. Yet, here’s a free program in Paint.net that boasts a lot of the same features whose file size is just a tiny fraction of what Photoshop’s is. Amazing
It kinda makes you wonder just what the heck Adobe is stuffing into all those bits and bytes.
May 28th, 2007 02:39
Oh that’s easy: they have to justify the hefty price tag, of course!
May 28th, 2007 11:41
@Mike:
Hmm maybe including ‘bloatware’ is a norm these days

I remember those days too
@Mark:
You might have a point there.
Kinda hard to have a hefty price tag when your app is less than 2 megs

I was looking for a simple and fast image editor and this certainly came in handy for me. It is easy to use and has all the basic image editing features like resize, crop, trim etc which I need.

Paint.Net is so powerfull… I agree that Photoshop is still better but it is so expensive. Paint.Net allows to perform most of the things Photoshop does, isn’t it?!
