6 Important Tips For New Bloggers
After only 3 months of blogging, I’ve been lucky enough to figure out a few things that are essential to new bloggers like myself. Here’s my list:
- Be Patient - Don’t get frustrated if you don’t get a lot of traffic right away. Remember, it’s a new blog. It will take a little time for your blog to get noticed.
- Write About What You Love - If you write about things you love, your readers will feel the passion you put in your articles and are more than likely to come back. Don’t write for the sake of writing. Your posts will come off as boring lectures and your readers will leave your blog in a heartbeat.
- Circulate - Having great content is not enough, you need to make an effort to get noticed. Join social networking sites to promote your blog. There are a couple of networking sites catering to bloggers, these should be your priority. Sites like StumbleUpon, MyBlogLog, BlogCatalog, and Bumpzee are good sources of potential visitors/subscribers to your blog. Try to visit other blogs and leave quality comments on posts you liked. Chances are, the blog’s owner and readers will check out your blog if they liked your comment.
- Befriend Other Bloggers - One of the benefits of blogging is the opportunity to get to know other bloggers and form new friendships. Try to find bloggers who are open to forming a partnership with your blog. This is a great help as you and your partners will be promoting each other’s content on a regular basis.
- Post Regularly - Try to stick to your posting schedule. If you usually post at noon everyday, then stick to that. If you only make one post per week, then try to publish it on the same day every week. Having a great article isn’t going to help you if your readers don’t know when your next post will come. If your blog is already established, i.e., you already have a big subscriber base, then you could get away with infrequent posting. For new blogs however, posting regularly is the best way to go.
- Be Appreciative - Stop worrying about the fluctuation of your subscriber count, or how little traffic your blog is getting. Try to remember that your blog is new and that all good things come to those who wait. Remember that every visitor or subscriber to your blog is precious. It doesn’t matter if you have 10 or 10,000. Every single one is precious.

Great post Brown. My subscriber base was just starting to go up in early January, and then I stopped blogging for four months. Watching how I continued to get page views, I thought I’d better start getting back into it. Now my subscriber base is essentially dropped way below what I would like and the fact you’ve got 90 readers in three months, blows my mind.
Great job and great post.

Bang on with this post. It’s hard not to get discouraged when you hear of people making money after blogging for a month or two, but traffic will come. For the longest time I couldn’t get my Technorati rank below 100,000. Then the traffic started coming in and over a period of about 3 weeks I’ve gone from 90,000 to 50,000.
But the traffic will come.

Patience is something I’m a little short on. I think that networking is important for getting links and is likely the difference between success or failure. John Chow has a nice scheme for getting a good search engine rank. I wonder why he doesn’t switch the phrase every so many batches. He could get himself highly ranked for a bunch of different terms instead of going for #1 on make money online
May 18th, 2007 12:23
Nice tips, I would like to add one more thing. Read top blogs and comment on other blogs to get noticed. This is one thing I did when I started my blog and I got good results also.

I’ve been running the eye now for ages. I didn’t really make much effort until recently, and I’m getting a lot more readers, now I’ve added feedburner, and Stumble Upon and that kind of thing. Also MyBlogLog is a great help too.
Currently, my readership seems to be slowly rising. I don’t write about anything in particular, just things I feel like writing about at the time. I try to inject a little humor into my posts at times - perhaps this helps.
Anyway, I enjoy doing it, and I’m going to keep banging away at it. I’m not really doing it to make a huge revenue, but ok, yeah it would be nice to spend say 2-3 hours a day blogging for a living, and spending the rest of the time realizing my ambition to become a professional beach bum.
By the way I have your blog on my bloglines feed.

Hi,
Good point,
I feel that the most important aspect, as well as the most amazing one when you first start to blog is how you actually connect with your community of readers as well as with other readers!
This is what really is addictive actually!

i believe the most important factor which is the patient is something that not every bloggers have … and most gave-up because the expectation of getting huge traffic and money within shortest-time wasn’t there …
there’re simply too many new bloggers joining everyday … couple that with existing A-list bloggers, you definitely need lots of stamina to continue with what you’re doing … it’s a marathon …
cheers

Hi Judy! Thanks for the kind words
August 5th, 2007 02:48
These are very good tips, especially the one about being patient. I have been at it for four months now and have very little traffic other than what I have been able to generate from traffic exchanges. I definitely need to get things moving in the traffic building and page rank departments.
One thing that I have tried under the “befriend other bloggers” category is when I find a blog that I want to partner with, I will write up a review on the other blog and link to it in the text of the post. If possible, I will use the blogger’s name in the title of the post and in the anchor text for the link. This seems to get the other person’s attention quite readily, and I will usually wind up with a nice comment on my own blog.
August 5th, 2007 02:55
@Karl:
Have you tried joining MyBlogLog, BlogCatalog, Bumpzee, and StumbleUpon? Those are easy ways to get your blog noticed too.
August 5th, 2007 03:36
I’ve got MyBlogLog and StumpleUpon, and they do help with traffic of course, but the bottom line is always content, and that can be the hardest part at times!
August 5th, 2007 04:10
Hehe that’s true
August 5th, 2007 04:38
@Brown Baron:
I have joined Bumpzee and MyBlogLog earlier today after I saw your comment with the Bumpzee link in the other thread. I have been reading favorable reports about StumbleUpon on other blogs (my mother seems to like that site too even though she is not into blogging at all), but I still need to officially register there. I have never heard of BlogCatalog; this will be another one to check out later. There are also a whole slew of other social bookmarking sites such as Digg, Reddit, etc. that I want to figure out as well.
Part of my problem is that it’s just taking me too long to decide on what I am going to write about and then actually get the article written, do the proofreading, and publish it. After I get a post done, I’m usually trying to catch up on the news and research ideas for the next post. Somehow I never seem to find enough time to do all of the promotional stuff without falling behind on the posting. Based on my experiences up to this point, I will either need to find a way to write my articles faster or go to a less frequent posting schedule.
August 5th, 2007 04:58
@Karl:
I would hold off on getting getting involved with Reddit and Digg for now. BlogCatalog is very similar to MyBlogLog.
The writing is really the biggest part. If you could get it done right away, you have more time to visit other blogs and get some exposure.
August 5th, 2007 05:39
Sometimes I sit down to write a very short note on my blog, and end up with a couple of hundred words. Other times, I can’t think of bugger all to say. However, I’d go along with the “content is king” thing.
Why?
Well, not only do you want people to visit your blog but you want them to come back. It’s a bit like having a store, you want to keep the customers you have, AND attract new ones too.
August 5th, 2007 12:51
I’d have to agree with that. Sometimes my wife would look at me and say, “You don’t look like you have anything to write”. Maybe the zombie expression on my face gave it away.

I’ve done just about everything that you’ve mentioned for over a month now. Is there something that can be improved on my blog? I feel like I’m missing something because I’m geting very little traffic right now. I’m relatively new to blogging but have been posting regularly. I guess patience holds true. Just yesterday technorati dropped all of my posts from their index and I don’t know why.
August 20th, 2007 03:21
Starting a blog is easy. Keeping it going is the tough part when the novelty of it goes away.
August 20th, 2007 14:09
@Troy:

Technorati has done that to a lot of people. I hope they fix it soon. As for the traffic, have you tried partnering with blogs in your niche?
I think it took me 2 months before I got 10 people to visit regularly haha. You’re off to a much better start
August 21st, 2007 17:22
“Remember that every visitor or subscriber to your blog is precious. It doesn’t matter if you have 10 or 10,000. Every single one is precious.”
Reading this reminded of some sage advice I was given once in a different context. I used to be a solo performance musician, doing classical guitar gigs.
One evening at a gathering of musicians, someone asked one of the veterans how to play for a big crowd. I’ve never been able to forget the answer he gave.
“Whenever I play, regardless of where I am or how many people are in the audience, I always play to one person. I never play to the crowd, I play to a person.”
“When you play to the crowd, you sound and look superficial. Only when you focus on playing not the crowd, but to each individual in the room, only then can your true passion and music reach them.”
“If you want to learn how to play for a big crowd, go down to the corner coffee shop and learn how to play for an audience of two people. Then just do the exact same thing for every other venue you play at.”
