The DoFollow Community: Link Love At Its Best

I FollowA while back I wrote about my decision to add the DoFollow plugin to this blog. Since then I’ve been visiting different blogs to see how many use DoFollow like me. A look at Deborah’s post about it shows how quickly the community has grown. She provides a nice list of people that are part of the DoFollow community.

The logo that I use for DoFollow was graciously provided by Randa Clay.

This is my personal list of blogs that use DoFollow:

Hi. Just to let you know that I have taken out the do not follow on my blog as a thank you for my commenter’s. I found that I got a number of comments like nice blog which is not adding to the conversation. So I just don’t advertise it and I do moderate and delete obvious link grabbers. How do you handle them?

    Hi Peter,
When I get comments like the ones you mentioned I usually delete them.

Yeah, I delete those and the usual trackbacks I get from reddit and the like.

But as for the do-follow crowd, am I understanding that the image you use (and something I’ve seen on other blogs) is the standard?

I have the DoFollow plugin on my site, I assumed most people had this set up - is this not the case?

Should I be placing the logo on my site, so other people are aware I have it?

I think having the logo is a good idea. At the very least it should make people aware that you have DoFollow enabled.

Okay, stupid question: so why would it concern me if I know if someone’s blog will follow me or not? Would that make a person think twice about entering a comment? I mean, sure it would be nice to have follow on, but it never crosses my mind when I post a comment.

When people know that you have dofollow enabled they feel more inclined to keep commenting because they know that every comment gives a link back to them.

Thank you for compiling this list of DoFollow blogs. About one month ago, I created a separate bookmark folder called “Blogs Without Nofollow” so that I could keep track of these kinds of sites and comment on them later. After I gather a sufficient number of blogs that have joined the movement, I will publish a list similar to yours so that we can get the “link love” going.

    @Brown Baron:

Yes, you’re certainly right about that! Before I found this site I only had about three of them bookmarked. Because there are so many blogs out there with nofollow on them, I have found that it is actually quite difficult to find one that is not unless I specifically search under “nonofollow” types of keywords.

I will take some time to go through the sites in your list and figure out which ones match my interests, my site’s content, etc., but once I get my own “NoNofollow favorites” collection together, I will be sure to include this blog in the final list.

Answering Sam, nofollow wasn’t for the benefit of bloggers, it was for the benefit of Google. I doubt Google care about you getting tons of spam, but they do care about the links created by that spam skewing their results.

Okay, I have gone through your list of DoFollow blogs and have bookmarked most of them. However, I found a few that you might want to check on:

    1. The last one on your list, “Mark Robinson” resolves to a GoDaddy parked page.

    2. Two other blogs, “A Virtual Exit” and “David Airey” appear to be using NoFollow in their comments. It is possible that these blog authors have changed their policies since your original list was published.

At any rate, thank you for providing the DoFollow list. This will be a good resource for comments, traffic, and content ideas.

Have you noticed any extra spam since removing nofollow? Which spam plugins do you use?

I’ve been reading a bit about the “dofollow” movement and my only concern is spam… otherwise, it is a great way to encourage comments, no doubt.

I’ve never had nofollow at tech-rant.com and with Askimet + BadBehaviour I get a spam or two every few months. So it really is nothing to worry about. If you block posts with more than 1 link in them you’ll probably cut out 99% of the bots.

Thanks for the response. And wow, only 1? You are a brave, brave man!

So far, in addition to Aksimet, I also use the JSSpamblock plugin, which should hinder machine-based spam (it requires an actual browser to be opened, with Javascript active, otherwise it requires a random number to be typed in. Not quite a CAPTCHA, but similar in theory I suppose).

I want to discourage spam while not hindering the usability for my visitors. The plugin I mentioned above is invisible to a user running a Javascript-enabled browser (which should be just about everyone nowadays!).

Speaking of plugins - I *really* like your comment preview plugin, very nice!!

I’ve had mine do follow for a few months now and it’s definitely improved the number of comments I get. It’s nice that you allow some anchor text in your name field too, my policy is that if you include your actual name with some link text then it’s fair enough. If I get long garbage links then they get deleted. Like you I also moderate the “nice post” stuff that really adds nothing to your post.
