DoFollow Plugin Added
After reading Andy Beard’s post on using the DoFollow plugin, I decided to add it to this blog as well. What this means is that from now on, any comment or trackback you leave on this blog will automatically give a permanent link back to you. Even if you don’t make it to the list of Top Commentators you’ll still get a link back.
Andy has provided a list of DoFollow plugins for anyone interested in using it.

I think plugin will give an improvement in Technorati ranking.

Let me know if it does

The best thing is that it definately encourages readers to comment more .
April 14th, 2007 02:20
It also encourages more spammers and thats the sad part

Akismet should catch most of it. I just have to monitor the comments closely(do that anyway
). The goal at least for me is to build a community.

I currently use the DOfollow plugin and definitely encourage other people to use it. I know some people don’t care if it’s not available, while I think other people enjoy knowing that they contributed to my site and are also getting a chance to get some linklove.
Sometimes I’ll even contact a website not using it (my SEO For Firefox plugin will highlight nofollow links in a color I chose) and let them know how it’ll help them out in the long run; Most cases they’ll add it since it’s not really anything bad for them.

Having run blogs for 2 years using DoFollow, I can assure you it doesn’t increase spam.
There are a few people who specifically search for blogs who use DoFollow, to leave comments for links. I myself have Google Alerts setup for mentions of dofollow, nofollow, no nofollow etc
I strongly recommend people include a comments policy on their blog, and the new “Don’t Be an Idiot” badge is great too.
Technorati do pick up links from comments that don’t contain NoFollow.
There are negative aspects to using DoFollow for SEO, if a site isn’t setup correctly to spread Google Juice to internal pages.
It would be very good to add some kind of related posts plugin here, use a tagging plugin to internal pages rather than link to Technorati (UTW can do both the tagging and related pages, and another plugin can add related posts to your feeds using UTW), and use a hacked version of Sociable that doesn’t leak juice (available for download on my site)
You probably don’t need the directory links on every page for it to count as reciprocation, you could just use some if is_home() wordpress logic

Thanks for the tips Andy

This is the third blog I have read that has implemented the do follow tag. I have also noticed the growing popularity of the “top commentators” plugin. I suppose if you are going to implement a “top commentators” plugin it doesn’t make much sense to have rel=nofollow in the commentator’s website links.
